While many people desire a short cut lawn, it is often not the best practice to mow Bermuda grass too low. Mowing Bermuda at a higher level can lead to stronger root systems and more shade on the soil, allowing the grass to retain more of its moisture. This practice will also help in eliminating the growth of new weeds in your lawn, because they will not get the sunlight they need to grow.
The optimal height for Bermuda during the growing season should be between 2” to 2.5”. No more than 1/3 of the grass blade should be cut during a single mowing. Cutting more will lead to a yellowing of the yard, which many people refer to as “burning up the lawn”, and will increase water requirements. That is why it is important to mow Bermuda at a minimum of one time per week, or move the height up throughout the mowing season.
Fescue
Fescue lawns are beautiful year long, because they remain green throughout the year. However, it is a more delicate grass and can take some extra care. It is not recommended to plant fescue in areas that receive direct sunlight for the majority of the day. During the hotter months, it can easily become stressed from heat and require more water. Also, it should be noted that Fescue should not be mowed as low as Bermuda lawns, as this will also add stress to the lawn. Optimal heights for fescue are 3.5” to 4”.
